When I was with Jessica I had her full attention, she made me feel comfortable, cared for, and safe.
I think Jessica was the charge nurse the night I went into the ER with severe pelvic pain. I could tell that she was dealing with a heavy patient load and patients were being told it would be a long wait. She was hustling around dealing with a huge load but I could see she was taking the time to really listen to each patient. When I start to feel dizzy because of my pain she did her best to see me as quickly as possible and make me as comfortable as possible. When other more emergent cases came in, she was extremely apologetic but let me know that I would be seen. That care let me know I wasn't abandoned. When I got back to the ER she was there during a painful exam, and was kind, compassionate, and caring in a way that made me feel safe. I could tell that I was one of many, many patients she was taking care of that night simply by virtue of how busy the ER was- but when I was with her I had her full attention, she made me feel comfortable, cared for, and safe. The ability to care for others joyfully is a skill that should be rewarded especially with the way the world is right now.
