When depression, exhaustion, and panic set in, Jessica always had a smile, a hug, and reassuring words for me. It didn't make any of those things go away, but I knew I wasn't alone in this fight.
My brother came under the care of Jessica after he had vascular surgery. He is hard of hearing, has the beginnings of dementia and is very much an introvert--not the easiest of people to deal with. Jessica took the time to ask questions (not on any of your forms) to find out about the person...not just the condition. When she learned he had been diagnosed with dementia, she did a complete 180 degree turn in how she approached coaching him to do what was required for his recovery. She was always smiling and firm, and despite his being in a place he didn't want to be and not understanding why he had to stay, he began to light up when she entered his room. There was a breakdown of communication between me and his doctors. In their defense, when you speak to my brother, he gives all the signs of understanding when, in fact, he probably can't hear you and definitely can't repeat what you just said. Jessica stepped in and let the doctors know they needed to be communicating with me - not him. When talk of discharge began, my brother had to be cathed and recathed multiple times a day. I have a tremor and knew I would not be able to do this. He was also unsteady when walking, and if he fell, I would not be able to lift him. Jessica took the initiative and began the process to get him into rehab. When depression, exhaustion, and panic set in, Jessica always had a smile, a hug, and reassuring words for me. It didn't make any of those things go away, but I knew I wasn't alone in this fight. Bottom line...anyone can learn the mechanics of nursing, but those people who nurse to the family of the patients in their care are the outstanding ones. BSW has a jewel hidden on STC 3. She should be the poster child of nursing and lauded as the Gold Standard of what it takes to be a nurse!!
