It's helpful having someone like Jess when you're in charge because she's so willing to step in, and she also has a wealth of experience and advice to offer.
Jess Soltis is a great nurse, both to her patients and her colleagues. Last night, we were getting multiple admissions on top of each other to a unit that was already short-staffed. If that wasn't enough, we had a difficult situation with one of the babies we needed to admit from the nursery. It was critical that this baby have a prosec transponder for their safety due to the family's social situation. When our transport nurse and the nursery staff encountered difficulty with moving the baby from the nursery to the NICU, I knew Jess was the person to go to--she's phenomenal at remembering the right way to do things for those situations that rarely come up.
Even though she had her own assignment, morning labs, and an orientee, she jumped right in, went downstairs, and talked to several people from security to ensure that we were able to escalate this baby's care appropriately while maintaining adequate security. She also jumped in and volunteered to admit that baby at the end of her shift, even though I never would have expected her to with her already full assignment. She admitted like it was easy, and then stayed busy helping make sure we had enough warmers for the day shift admission spots, and helped me figure out how to accommodate the new babies into the day shift assignments. It's helpful having someone like Jess when you're in charge because she's so willing to step in, and she also has a wealth of experience and advice to offer. I know if there's a crisis, I can count on her to help keep the ship afloat.
