Jessica placed the patient in a wheelchair and transported the patient up to the 5th floor of the hospital where the patient was finally able to spend time with her baby.
We had a young lady present to the ICU after having just delivered a beautiful baby girl the night before. During the patient's C-Section, a complication arose causing the patient to develop a hematoma that a CT later on the evening discovered was still bleeding. The patient was emergently rushed back to the OR and was brought to the ICU post-op due to her critical condition. Due to the critical nature of her condition, she had not been able to see her child since delivery.
Jessica assumed care of the patient the next morning and aided in stabilizing her further. It was determined that the patient's bleeding had subsided and the patient's condition was improving. However, the patient needed to remain in the ICU for at least another night to make sure that no further complications arose. Jessica, being a mother herself, understood the emotional suffering the new mother was experiencing not being able to see her new baby. Due to the risks posed by the environment in the ICU, it would not be safe to bring the newborn down for the mother to see. Instead, Jessica collaborated with the Nursery, OB, and Critical Care teams to bring the patient up to see her baby in the safest manner possible. After ensuring that the patient would not be at risk transporting out of the ICU, Jessica placed the patient in a wheelchair and transported the patient up to the 5th floor of the hospital where the patient was finally able to spend time with her baby.
This selfless act by Jessica embodies what it means to be a caring and compassionate nurse. She understood that what was supposed to be one of the happiest moments in the young woman's life was spoiled by the emergent nature of her illness. Jessica took time out of her busy shift to make sure the woman had time to enjoy her beautiful baby in a safe environment. It is easy for us as nurses to get caught up in our daily tasks and forget to take time to empathize with the ones we care for. Jessica made sure to keep sight of what is important; proving loving and compassionate care to those that need us most.
