My wife severely fractured her humerus and was hospitalized for three and a half days. Her pain level was 7-10 for much of that time. During her stay, my wife and I encountered many competent and well-trained clinical caregivers and healthcare workers. Of those many professionals, one, in particular, stood out: RN Jessica (Jess) Moden.

In addition to being competent and professional, Jess was compassionate, empathetic, patient, and caring. I read that the humerus bone is one of the most painful bones there is to fracture. My wife's fracture was 6-8" long and required surgical repair. Unfortunately, it ended up being just over two weeks before the swelling subsided enough for the surgical repair. So what my wife was dealing with during her hospital stay was extreme pain and what the trauma team was working to arrive at was the proper mix of medications to effectively control her pain.

The morning of her third day my wife experienced a 45-minute-long Level 10 pain episode as the result of attempting to sit up in bed with assistance. Jess was on duty and was extremely compassionate and helpful going above and beyond to help keep my wife comfortable. When the Trauma Team came in for their daily rounds, Jess explained what had happened earlier and described my wife's level of sustained pain. Shortly thereafter the Trauma Team changed to a different combination of meds which ultimately were much more effective.

Jess was also on duty the following day when my wife was discharged. She offered excellent advice and tips on things we might try at home to keep my wife more comfortable. Jess's warmth, humor, compassion, kindness, and bright spirit were exactly what my wife needed to get through her stay at North Memorial. In addition to Jess's great work, we also appreciated the outstanding work of the Trauma and Orthopedic Teams and the work of many other healthcare professionals who treated and cared for my wife.
