May 2026 Honoree
Jessica R Porter, RN
I would like to nominate Jessica Porter, RN, for the extraordinary compassion and humanity she showed while caring for a confused and vulnerable patient. This patient had already required restraints 3 separate times during her hospitalization due to confusion and safety concerns. When Jessica came on shift, she saw a person who needed patience, dignity, and connection. On two instances, Jessica was able to safely remove the restraints. She took the time to sit with the patient, talk with her, and redirect her anxiety. In a moment that perfectly captured her heart for nursing, Jessica promised the patient a manicure the next day. True to her word, Jessica brought in the nail care supplies the next day. She carefully washed her patient's hands and painted them - HOT PINK, of course! Exactly the way the patient had requested. What might seem like a small gesture became a powerful moment of trust, comfort, and humanity for a confused patient. Because Jessica chose kindness, patience, and creativity, the patient remained calm and cooperative enough to transfer to rehab without restraints. Jessica's actions remind us that nursing is not only about clinical skill, but about seeing the person behind the illness. Her willingness to calm down and connect made a meaningful difference in this patient's experience and outcome. Jessica embodies the spirit of the DAISY Award through her compassion, advocacy, and unwavering commitment to treating every patient with dignity and respect.
Thank you, Jessica R, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
