Jess's empathy and ability to deescalate the situation led to proper care and a calmer patient. It also changed the atmosphere of the entire unit.
We recently had a very combative elderly patient, who screamed every time someone would come into the room. She wouldn't let anyone examine her or touch her. Staff were unable to check on her and properly attend to what was medically needed to ensure her well health and well-being. This went on for a few days until Jessica’ s first shift with the patient. She went in calmly, with a big smile on her face.
Jess got to know the patient first. She learned about her life, family, and interests. Through their talks, Jess found out that the patient was a cheerleader in her younger days. This clicked immediately with Jess and before you know it, each time Jess entered the room she would chant the patient's name and the patient was smiling, laughing and raising her arms up to cheer along with Jess. When Jess went in to check on her, the patient called Jess her angel in front of any of the doctors and other staff members.
Jess's empathy and ability to deescalate the situation led to proper care and a calmer patient. It also changed the atmosphere of the entire unit. I'm sure that it had a negative effect on surrounding patients, as well as staff, every time this patient would scream. Jess's actions led to a quieter and better functioning unit. Jess definitely has a way with elderly and dementia patients. Her laughter can be heard throughout Med 4. Always smiling and ready to work. She is well deserving of a DAISY!
