Jessica went the extra step to make sure his pictures were hung up in his new room and included his wife during the whole journey via FaceTime so she could share in his experience and make him feel like she was right there with him.
I began my career as a Registered Nurse at the VA approximately one year ago. I have had the good fortune of working with Jessica during my training. Jessica served as a role model to me that exemplifies the characteristics I admire so much in a nurse. Her willingness to take time for the Veterans she serves gained my utmost respect. For example, when I began working, I noticed Jessica taking her time to change a Veteran's bandages and not hurry through the process. She was kind and spoke to the Veteran with compassion explaining each step along the way to decrease the Veterans anxiety. I could see firsthand how her communication skills de-escalated a situation with a very adamant Veteran about having his dressings changed. This is just one example of Jessica's ability to gain trust and confidence with whom she engages.
Jessica is always on the lookout to help improve the unit and the Veterans' lives. She puts the Veterans first even if it means changes in her own agenda. If help is needed Jessica has the commitment to serve.
During the uncertain times we have faced due to the COVID pandemic, Jessica was presented with the daunting task of moving one of our Veterans to a new room. This task was especially hard because the Veteran was on a ventilator and he was moving to a whole new environment. He was used to his room and one he shared many memories with his wife who visited him daily before the restrictions took place at the VA due to safety concerns. Jessica took the time to set up his new room prior to his move with pictures of him and his wife. She went the extra step to make sure his pictures were hung up in his new room and included his wife during the whole journey via FaceTime so she could share in his experience and make him feel like she was right there with him.
I have never heard Jessica talk unkindly of anyone and that really is a remarkable trait. Jessica's consideration of the Veterans' health and well-being has stayed with me as a new staff member, and I will never forget how she treated the Veterans at the VA Hospital and her fellow staff members.
