Jessica Taylor and I had a clinical rotation together over the Summer 2016 semester. Jessica being the kind of person she is, asked me if there was anything she could help me with since her patient was taken care of. I accepted Jessica 's help and had her work in my patients ' room while I went to grab supplies. Before I had gathered all the supplies she got my attention in the hallway to let me know my patient had had a change in mental status. After trying to communicate with my patient and realizing the severity of the situation, Jessica acted quickly and aided me during a code situation. Due to Jessica 's intuition, fast response and teamwork, we were able to put the patient back into a safe and comfortable environment which helped aid in recovery and evading major complications of an ischemic stroke.
Not only does Jessica show compassion in the hospital with her patients, she also shows compassion and embraces diversity in the community. During her time here in Galveston, Jessica has mentored two young girls from a low-income community that needed a positive role model. I have had the privilege to work with her at three different clinical sites and have seen nothing but compassion, dignity and respect given to all patients regardless of who they are.
I would also like to share a story of Jessica 's personal character amongst adversity. During the Fall 2016 semester, Jessica broke a bone in her right foot. Her doctor told her that she could be in a boot for up to 12 weeks and would have to use crutches for the majority of the time for this rare type of break. Not being able to bear weight on her foot and the expectations of nursing school would worry any nursing student to death. Now I 'm not going to say she didn 't struggle from time to time, but I tell you overall this girl had an amazing attitude. She couldn 't drive, she couldn 't walk without crutches, but she was still expected to work her clinical rotations, and she made it all happen with a smile on her face. Jessica has a "can-do-positive" attitude that I 've seen become contagious around other nursing students. Admist adversity, Jessica looks at what she has to do to overcome and accomplish the task, and plans for success.
In closing, Jessica Taylor is an exemplary student and a woman of integrity. As one of her study partners, I 've seen her go over and above to become a well-equipped and educated nurse. She did win the hardest worker award in our class. I have watched her lead study groups and individually help struggling students with their studies from time to time. I know that Jessica will be a life-long learner in whatever area of nursing she chooses. She desires to become a competent and confident nurse. When she walks into her patients ' room, she wants to be completely honest with them; she wants to do everything in her power to help them get well because that 's Jessica.
