Jessica eagerly volunteered and spent almost 45 minutes with this patient detangling and trimming her hair
Jessica went out of her way to help a patient who has been hospitalized for over a month feel more like a woman than a sick patient. I was the primary nurse caring for this patient and noticed that her hair was extremely matted and tangled in the back from lying in bed. She also had just received chemotherapy and was upset that her hair was thinning and would possibly be falling out soon. When the idea of cutting her hair was suggested by her husband, she teared up but nodded in approval.
I asked Jessica if she could help me cut her hair attempting to save as much of it as we could. Jessica eagerly volunteered and spent almost 45 minutes with this patient detangling and trimming her hair, saving a good amount of it to make her still feel pretty. She even gave the patient a fantastic bob cut after detangling the mess and chatted with her in such a positive and friendly manner the entire time to keep her nerves at ease. Jessica went above and beyond to help my patient feel more like herself after being poked and prodded during her long stay and the smile and happy tears that she expressed when she was finished were priceless. Jessica is a true DAISY Nurse for the care that she provides not only to her own patients but to everyone that she encounters each time she steps into Pennsylvania Hospital.
