I came into the hospital for Thoracic Cutlet Syndrome treatment (Decompression surgery). During my stay, I had amazing nurses, but one nurse stood out. She anticipated my needs and made sure that I was comfortable. She reassured me that my pain would be at a tolerable level, explained each medication and encouraged me when I was weak, and educated me on my condition (surgery).
More than any of that was her warm personality. She talked to me about my kids, and I learned about hers. She made me smile and made me feel like a normal person and not just her patient. These conversations help me so much during a very abnormal situation.
Lastly, it was the little things like the warm blankets and the lovely TGH pitcher with a wonderful handwritten (Get Better) message. No one really knows what it feels like to feel isolated in a hospital bed unless you are a patient laying in one. All I can say is “WOW!” Everyone needs a Jessica as their nurse.
