The patient was moved to tears and wouldn't stop praising Jessica's efforts.
Jessica advocated on behalf of her patient and prevented them from readmission to the hospital. The patient continued to experience abdominal pain after the providers determined the patient was ready to be discharged. Jessica pushed for an additional CTA of the abdomen because the patient kept telling her something was wrong. After the patient's exam, it was determined that he had acute cholecystitis, and general surgery was consulted that same day. The patient was very grateful to Jessica for advocating on his behalf and for believing that he wasn't just seeking pain medicine. When assessing a patient's pain level, the most accurate way is to ask the patient and avoid letting personal bias infiltrate the bedside. The patient was moved to tears and wouldn't stop praising Jessica's efforts. The patient stated, I finally know what's wrong now! I promised them I wasn't crazy. Advocating on behalf of one's patient is essential in day-to-day nursing and I believe Jessica went above and beyond in this situation. It can be difficult to speak up when physicians and nurses are experiencing conflicting ideas. Jessica was able to maintain professionalism while collaborating with the physician and this ultimately led to a better patient outcome overall. Thank you, Jessica, for all you do for our patients, families, and team members!
