My mother entered the hospital and was diagnosed with COVID. Her myasthenia gravis complicated matters, and she ended up losing her life. Jessie understood the medical side but was compassionate concerning the difficult decisions we had to make regarding a ventilator, BP meds, and other medical decisions. Jessie understood our wish to let my mother “go” without drastic removal of machines or medical interventions. In the end, we did not have to do anything, as my mother went on her own.

Some words to describe Jessie include knowledgeable, understanding, personable, welcoming, compassionate, and loving. Jessie never rushed us and even presented my mother's heartbeat to us when we were leaving. We so appreciated Jessie’s heartfelt manner as a compassionate nurse.

Jessie, along with the doctors on duty, understood the human element, the difficulty, and the gentleness of the news and medical advice. They prepared us for the next chapter. Jessie, in my opinion, is an exemplar of this DAISY Award and should be recognized for her knowledge and compassion.

Jessie’s patients were not just "patients.” The families were not just "people.” Jessie gets it; Jessie understands the fear, the emotions, and the difficulty. Jessie is hands down the best nurse my mother ever had in her hospital experience.
