I am honored to nominate Nurse Jessie Powell for the DAISY Award. During the most difficult and uncertain months of our lives, Jessie was more than a nurse; she was a steady presence, a source of strength, and a true advocate for our family.
My husband, E, was involved in a traumatic boating accident. He remained hospitalized for over a month. Those weeks were filled with fear, uncertainty, and overwhelming medical decisions that no family ever expects to face. In the midst of it all, Jessie cared for E with extraordinary compassion, clinical expertise, and unwavering empathy.
E underwent three major abdominal surgeries, which left him with an open abdominal incision to allow for proper healing over time. Jessie’s advanced wound care skills were instrumental in his recovery. She managed complex wound care with precision and confidence, always prioritizing infection prevention, comfort, and long-term healing. Her knowledge and attention to detail reassured us during a time when every complication felt like a potential setback.
Jessie worked alongside multiple teams at ChristianaCare to help coordinate E’s care, ensuring communication was seamless and that no detail was overlooked. She went out of her way to help us understand E’s medical status, breaking down complex and often frightening information into explanations we could truly understand.
Her skill and knowledge were evident in every interaction, but what truly set her apart was the way she treated E and our entire family with patience and heartfelt kindness. She never made us feel like just another case. She balanced professionalism with genuine warmth, helping E feel safe and supported during an incredibly vulnerable time.
Beyond her technical excellence, Jessie offered emotional support that carried us through the darkest days. She encouraged us to celebrate small milestones, encouraged hope when progress felt slow, and reminded us that healing is both physical and emotional. Her presence brought calm into chaos and light into moments that felt unbearably heavy.
Because of Jessie’s dedication and care, E not only progressed physically but also regained confidence and hope for his future after a life-changing injury. The impact she has had on our lives cannot be measured. She embodies everything the nursing profession stands for: compassion, competence, advocacy, teamwork, and humanity.
