She delivers her words eloquently and is very friendly, but she makes sure her patients are doing what it takes to get better.
Jessie is an amazing teacher and mentor. She not only teaches me, but she is often a resource for other nurses on the floor. She dedicated time to becoming a CCRN, which makes her knowledgeable, but she is a lifelong learner and is always searching for ways to help other nurses. She voluntarily attended a cardiac conference on her day off between shifts, which demonstrates her dedication to being the best nurse she can be.

Jessie is so cheerful. I never feel like a bother to her, and she always includes me in conversations with coworkers, etc. even just about personal life. She is enthusiastic to teach, and she advocates for me to get valuable experiences. For example, we had a PUMP patient coming to the floor, which means that the nurse assigned to that patient needed extra hands getting the patient set up in the room while he received report from the OR. She pulled me into the room, and even though there were plenty of nurses doing things quickly, she stopped the nurse who pulled out the materials to draw labs and asked if I could do it because she knew I could do it quickly. She also announced to the room that I would do the OG tube placement. In a room full of very capable and experienced nurses, it is hard as a student to “claim” what jobs you will do or even know what needs to be done. Her confidence in me really made me feel important and part of the team. Sometimes, as a student, you feel "in the way," but she always recognizes my skills and what I can contribute.

On another occasion, we had a patient whose family member at the bedside was very overbearing and making “jokes” about how she was “watching me” as I provided any care for the patient. Jessie stood up for me and made it clear that I was capable and said that staring makes people nervous. She has advocated for me and supported me, which has helped me build so much confidence at the bedside. She is personable with her patients, and I even witnessed her having a conversation with a patient about his code status and that she is a resource for him if he feels like he is being convinced to continue treatment. She delivers her words eloquently and is very friendly, but she makes sure her patients are doing what it takes to get better. She lets them know they need to be up out of bed, ambulating, following diet orders, etc., in a way that they take her seriously but do not think she is being mean, and this is a skill I really needed to learn!

Jessie is dedicated to being a great nurse, and it really reflects who she is as a person. She is open and honest about me being her first capstone student and how she hopes I am getting what I want out of the experience, and her concern for that and always uplifting me makes her a DAISY Nurse.
