I worry very much about the psychological toll all this has had on my daughter and I believe this has been eased because of Jhai's regular and genuine care.
Since her kidney cancer diagnosis, my 3yo daughter has had multiple admissions on Baird 5. It became clear during these many admissions that Jhai was my daughter's favorite nurse to interact with. This also became apparent to my wife and I as well. Jhai was always friendly and presented herself in a caring way. Jhai seemed to remember small details about my daughter that really made a difference. Jhai also seemed to remember details about my wife and me, and asked about things in an appropriate way. Jhai was also very timely and seemed to be on top of my daughter's care which at times became complex medically. Jhai genuinely seemed to care about my daughter and went above and beyond in her work. For example, at times (pre-COVID) Jhai had stopped by to say hello to my daughter, even though she was not her nurse that day or would offer to take her to the play area on the unit. Whenever our daughter gets admitted my wife and I always hope Jhai is our nurse because everything seems to go smoother. What a roller coaster it has been throughout the process of my daughter's treatment, from her being diagnosed in the ED; to things quickly escalating where my daughter was intubated and ended up in Boston for 30+ days; to walking my daughter through radiation and then ending up back in Boston; to her having the risky surgery; to my wife having our second child in the midst of this; and to my daughter receiving chemo during a pandemic. Little has felt stable since all this began last September. Having a consistently good nurse has made a huge difference. I worry very much about the psychological toll all this has had on my daughter and I believe this has been eased because of Jhai's regular and genuine care. Jhai also did an exceptional job at communicating what was happening. For example, I knew what drugs my daughter was getting, how long she would receive it, who the LNA would be, what the plan was for the day, etc. There were times when people would just come in and start doing things and I honestly got tired of asking who they were and what they were doing. Jhai always seemed to respect that I liked to know what was going on in my daughter's treatment. I felt comforted that at the end of shift, Jhai seemed to communicate well with the evening nurse and would come in with her before she left for the day. Now I should say that many of the nurses on the unit are excellent and did these things as well, but when we had Jhai as our nurse it felt a notch above.
