Jiali developed and implemented the bundle education consisting of Assessment, Clean, Check, Expose, Protect, Timely replace (ACCEPT) approach in Shanghai, China.
Jiali (Mary) Ma completed the St. Jude 15-month International EBP Nursing Fellowship program and EBP project utilizing the expertise of St. Jude Global Nursing and the nursing team at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The program strengthened her evidence-based practice competencies as a pediatric oncology nurse from a low- and middle-income country, developing her as a change agent who has positively impacted patient care and the work environment. During bone marrow transplantation (BMT), children with cancer often experience incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD).
Jiali developed and implemented the bundle education consisting of Assessment, Clean, Check, Expose, Protect, Timely replace (ACCEPT) approach. The incidence of IAD decreased from 2.05% to 0.72% in department one from 10.67% to 2.66% in department 2. The healing time decreased from 15.92 days to 8.5 days in Department 1 and from 15.85 days to 14 days in Department 2.
Seventy-four caregivers and fifty-six nursing staff were educated. After providing bundle education, the average accuracy of IAD prevention and treatment knowledge tests ranged from 88.39% to 94.05% among staff. The incidence of IAD decreased to 0.72% in department 1 and 2.66% in department 2. The healing time decreased from 15.92 days to 8.5 days in Department 1 and from 15.85 days to 14 days in Department 2.
The outcome of this bundle education (ACCEPT) of IAD during BMT was easy for nurses and caregivers to remember, understand, and practice. It was effective in decreasing the incidence and healing time of IAD of children during BMT. ACCEPT may provide a new perspective for skin protection in children during BMT; its effectiveness is worth exploring in more regions and countries.
