Jill is the sickle cell nurse coordinator and always goes above and beyond to help this population, but today was different. We noted one of the patients with a child with sickle cell was walking with an abnormal gait and was sent for referrals to get evaluated. The grandmother, as the primary caregiver, was given the results of the workup and became anxious about the potential need for surgery. After several missed appointments with the specialist, Jill recognized that anxiety was her barrier, and with her support network being limited, Jill arranged her transportation, reminded her of her appointment, met her at the front door, and accompanied her to the appointment. To be a support, to listen, and help her grandmother understand. Her compassion shone today.
