Jill recently cared for a patient on 5 West that was hospitalized on our unit for several weeks. The patient had a terminal prognosis with cancer that had metastasized to several other areas of the body, including the spine. During the patient's stay, she became weaker and weaker and was eventually unable to move her lower extremities. This patient had a 12 year old son. This patient was here for weeks and was leaning toward the decision of going to hospice. Jill knew how bad this patient wanted to be outside. One beautiful sunny day, Jill wheeled the patient in her bed outside to the brain tumor garden. There the patient's son picked flowers for her and they spent time laughing and enjoying the outside air and sun. I can only imagine what this time meant to the patient and her family.
