I am writing to nominate Jill Combs, OR ANM at Ballantyne Medical Center, for the DAISY Nurse Leader Award. It is with great admiration and respect that I recognize Jill for her extraordinary leadership, exceptional role modeling, and her ability to foster an environment that supports compassion, trust, mutual respect, and ethical behavior.
Jill has consistently exemplified the very qualities the DAISY Award seeks to honor. As a nurse leader, she has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to providing exceptional care while inspiring her team to do the same. She leads by example, showing empathy and compassion to her team, and encouraging her staff to approach their work with the same level of dedication and care. Through her leadership, she creates an environment where trust is the foundation of all relationships. Her ethical approach to nursing practice sets a high standard that motivates others to follow suit. One of her favorite sayings to surgeons when holding them accountable to policies is, “We follow the rules here at Ballantyne.”
One of Jill’s most outstanding qualities is her ability to motivate and unite the nursing team with a shared vision of excellence. She has cultivated a culture of mutual respect where every team member feels valued and empowered to contribute their best. Her enthusiasm is infectious, and she has a unique ability to rally her staff around common goals, resulting in improved patient care outcomes and a collaborative, positive work environment. This is evidenced by the OR consistently meeting or exceeding all metrics such as FCOTS, TOT, Instrument tracking, high patient satisfaction scores, and high teammate engagement scores on survey since opening in June 2023, some of the highest in the system. Surgeons consistently compliment the OR team at BALMC, and Jill has helped to build and foster this positive reputation.
In addition to her remarkable leadership, Jill fosters a sense of accountability and ethical responsibility in her team. She ensures that all staff members uphold the highest standards of care and integrity while also encouraging open and honest communication. She has conversations in real time to correct issues and hold teammates accountable. Her emphasis on mutual respect and ethical behavior strengthens the entire department and leads to better patient outcomes and enhanced job satisfaction for the nursing staff.
Her contributions have been immeasurable, and the positive impact of her leadership is felt across the entire unit. She truly embodies the values of the DAISY Award, consistently striving to achieve the best for her patients, her staff, and the organization as a whole.
