He no longer had to worry as much about his daughters being in separate places alone because Jill instantly gained his trust and assured their safety.
Jill went above and beyond to show compassion to a single dad trying to care for his sick daughter and juggle finding care for his other children. Even through a language barrier, she quickly showed integrity and gained the trust of the older children as well as the father, allowing the dad a moment of relief.

I am part of Nemours Critical Care Transport Team, and tonight, I witnessed Jill go above and beyond for a family. I didn’t want this moment to go without recognition. We came to pick up the youngest sibling of a primarily Spanish-speaking, single-parent family. Dad was in the room with three daughters when we arrived. Jill explained to the older girls, who then translated to Dad, that they would not be able to ride in the ambulance with us. You could see Dad trying to figure things out, making phone calls and discussing ideas with the older girls, but torn between assuring their safety and being with his sick daughter. Finally, a family member offered to pick up the other girls but stated he was roughly 20 minutes away. Jill assured the older girls they were to stay in the ER room with the door shut until said family member arrived, and once he arrived, she would arrange for security to escort him back, and the girls needed to verify this was their ride before she would let them go. While they translated this to their dad, instant relief came over his face. He no longer had to worry as much about his daughters being in separate places alone because Jill instantly gained his trust and assured their safety. While we were packing the patient up, the siblings were visibly upset and crying, worrying about their little sister. Jill comforted them and told them she was going to the cafeteria to grab lunch. She offered to buy them something to eat while they waited. Again, another family member with instant relief on their face not having to worry about being hungry while they waited for a ride.

To witness all of this as a bystander was such a pleasure. We are in a world where health care is always under scrutiny. Nights take place where we feel like we can’t give our patient the best care they deserve for different reasons. Tonight, I can attest Jill made a difference to every member of that family, not just the patient.
