Jill came down to our department (Radiation Oncology) with an inpatient in Critical Condition from the ICU. The patient was on a vent and came down with more lines than I could count. The patient has an obstruction involving his pulmonary artery, making him a very high risk for arterial bleed. Jill was kind, compassionate, attentive, and efficient in pushing meds when the patient's arterial pressure was bottoming out or too high.
In a very high-stress situation, Jill remained calm and was able to provide for that patient and treated him as if he was the most important patient. You could tell she loves her patients and she did everything she could to help keep this patient alive. That was over a week ago. Today that same patient is still coming to his radiation treatments.
Although his prognosis is still not great, we were able to give this patient several more days with his family who hasn't left his side. He verbalized that he plays rummy with his fiancé in his room and he has enjoyed coloring the past few days. I think because he got exceptional care on the front-end, having Jill as a nurse in the ICU helped him to where he is today. Thank you, Jill, for going above and beyond. You made a difference.
