It was Christmas Eve - and our staffing was horrible! It was just myself and another nurse here as labor nurses and, of course, a very sick labor patient came in that was in full blown labor needing an epidural, mag sulfate to prevent seizures, PCN - just very busy. Then, two more labor patients came in - we were totally overwhelmed.
Jill stopped in to drop off a present for a nurse coming back after a 6 month leave - and she had her daughter with her. It was Christmas Eve and they were getting ready to go do their family traditions, go out to eat, etc. She saw the shape Rhonda and I were in - running around like chickens with our heads cut off. She said she would run her daughter home and come back, and her daughter told her to ‘Just punch in and work, mom.’
Jill was totally our hero - she took our unit from unsafe to safe, and we were able to take care of all those labor patients. What better love than to give up Christmas Eve for your co-workers. She deserves all the praise and awards Borgess gives.
