Jim is exemplary in so many ways. Showing compassion to our patients, families and staff seems to come naturally to him. I’d like to share a personal example of this. I have a severe needle phobia, and per my doctor needed to have blood drawn. I had avoided this for approximately 11 years. Having heard so many compliments from patients and families in the ED, who had been cared for, or had loved ones cared for by Jim, I approached him and asked if he would be willing to do the draw for me. He said yes, and assured me that he would ease me through the process and that he would make certain I was okay. Indeed, he did just that. This was by far the best experience I have ever had with a needle. He was extremely gentle and talked me through the entire draw. He was very sensitive to the fact that I have a phobia, and never made me feel embarrassed or ashamed. After the draw, he sat with me and made certain I was okay before he left. I can assure you that this was not special treatment, just because I am an employee. I have received many calls through the years from patients and families expressing their gratitude for the care they received from Jim. Some of the cases were with children in the ED, and the parents were so grateful for the gentle and compassionate touch he had with their children, and what a difference this made in making it through a stressful event. The patients and families didn’t always know his name, but as soon as they described a tall male nurse, with dark short hair and a soothing voice, we always knew exactly who they were referring to. So many staff members and their families have heard of Jim’s expertise and gentle touch, and have requested that he place their IVs or perform blood draws, etc. He is truly an extraordinary nurse – and we are so blessed to have him.
Thank you Jim, for going above and beyond to care for our patients, families and fellow employees – and thank you for just being you…
