I have been a nurse for 37 years and have seen exceptional nurses in my career. However, there is one nurse who has made a permanent impression of going above and beyond the call of duty.
The public tends to recognize nurses as "heroes" especially this year in the time of COVID. However, this nurse has, through the 10 years I have worked with him, demonstrated exceptional care to patients, and assisted coworkers to also achieve this goal.
Jim works in discharge planning and makes sure his patients' needs are met while they are hospitalized and upon discharge. I have known him to purchase and take a bed to a patient who was being discharged because he would not be allowed to take the apartment without furniture. He even made sure that needs were met at home regarding pets. This put the patient at ease and aided in their care.
Because of his vast experience is knowledgeable in diverse areas of patient care, he not only will share knowledge with nurses but is willing to gown up and teach us how to apply a wound vac on a difficult site and how to improvise a dressing.
Jim will be retiring soon and will be missed by many nurses. I think of this award as the "Oscar" award for a nurse. It is international recognition for a nurse who provides exceptional care and Jim does this time and time again, instinctively, intuitively and with no thought of the time, effort or cost. Jim is a true DAISY Nurse.
