With Jimmy’s intervention, he most likely saved her life.
Not all heroes wear capes. They wear scrubs and in this case, they wear blue. Jimmy floated to ASU. One of his patients was to be discharged home from having surgery. The patient was stable all day and progressing as expected. She was ready to go home and all discharge paperwork was given. Before discharging, however, Jimmy took the last set of vital signs and noticed the patient’s erratic heart rate. Noticing this finding Jimmy did a stat EKG and the patient was found to be in uncontrolled afib RVR. The patient stated she had felt fine all day and instead of being discharged, the patient was transferred to another unit. With Jimmy’s intervention, he most likely saved her life.

On this same shift after report, Jimmy noticed that one of his other patients had a drastic change in condition. The patient was A/O x4 all shift and was now incoherent, diaphoretic, hypotensive, and unable to follow commands. Blood glucose was checked and was normal. He contacted the hospitalist to come to see the patient and ordered a stat CBC. RRT was also called to come to evaluate the patient. Jimmy, the oncoming night shift nurse, and I were at the bedside when the patient further appeared to deteriorate. A code blue was called and Jimmy stayed to speak with the intensivist and assist until the patient was then transferred to the ICU. Throughout the events of the day, Jimmy remained calm, cool, and collected. On top of all that he stayed to help nightshift out due to short staffing. It’s always a pleasure working with Jimmy and if I was to be a patient it would be a privilege to have him as my nurse as well.
