As a Charge Nurse, JJ provides leadership and support to the entire unit, often checking in with staff members and families.
My family and I have a very hard time drawing blood; we get six or seven pokes, even in our feet, and still no blood. Went to the lab two days in a row at the clinic I go to, and they sent me to the hospital on day three to get them. I've seen them poke my baby two or three times. JJ got skills, very talented got on first try. 100% trust JJ!

JJ Aranas is a true leader who is admired by many nurses. As a preceptor, JJ encourages new nurses to be confident and independent while teaching them nursing skills and prioritizing patient safety. Prior to discharging families, JJ collaborates with the family members to ensure they feel comfortable and confident in caring for their child at home. If any concerns or questions arise, JJ is quick to escalate them to ensure an environment that is focused on patient and family-centered care. Many would call JJ a strong patient advocate and a liaison between the healthcare team and patients and their families. As a Charge Nurse, JJ provides leadership and support to the entire unit, often checking in with staff members and families. JJ is also trained in de-escalation and is a member of the Vascular Access Team. With the high census and low staffing numbers, the Rehab Unit was in a bind recently. After a few sick calls, there was no one scheduled to work as Charge Nurse for the night shift during a time when there were multiple patients on the unit that were being followed by the RISK team and were considered extremely high acuity. This, along with existing Rehabilitation patients requiring special equipment and monitoring to keep them safe and/or promote healing, led us to reach out to all Rehab Unit Charge Nurses and back-up Charge Nurses – None of whom were available to cover. Since JJ is a Charge Nurse and has worked on the Rehab Unit many times, I was confident that JJ could work on our unit as a Charge Nurse and lead the night shift team. After escalating this to Leadership and our Unit Director, we all agreed that JJ was more than qualified to fill in as our Charge Nurse. JJ graciously agreed to come into work on his day off to support us. Following the shift, we received many positive reports from the overnight staff, as well as the oncoming shift Charge Nurse. The entire Rehab Team would like to thank JJ for being an exceptional Charge Nurse and role model to all here at Seattle Children’s.
