I feel Joan's actions on 6/16/14 exemplify beyond a doubt compassionate care and a respect for life and end of life. On this day the ED was swamped. Before shift change Joan had a 20 year old overdose patient die. Family decided not to come in so the body was placed in the morgue. Just as Joan was about to leave, a large amount of family members called to say they wanted to come in and say goodbye. Joan offered to stay. She got the body out of the morgue, moved her to an empty room, unbagged her and made her look peaceful for the family. She then met with the family. Joan prayed and cried with the family as they said their goodbyes. Family grief is one of the most difficult things we deal with and Joan knew what was coming and met it with compassion, sympathy, and love. She truly exemplified the meaning of the DAISY Award.
