My team and I were having many challenges with the functionality of the new insulin calculator. Joan Cavanaugh was available and present throughout the day and all hours of the night for the staff on the ICU/CCU and our patients. She is an exceptional nurse educator who consistently goes above and beyond for the delivery of safe and exceptional care! Joan also sat on our unit for hours to assist the nurses on how to use the paper tool for the insulin calculator. She stayed with our team to ensure the nurses were comfortable with the process. Thank you, Joan! We truly appreciate all you do and the organization and our patients are so very lucky to have you! In addition to Joan’s strong work in keeping up with stroke certification and training new and existing PCU nurses, Joan has spearheaded a massive rollout of the insulin calculation that transitioned LHMC and our member organizations, Beverly Hospital and Winchester Hospital, from the web insulin calculation to the EPIC calculation. She has been at the patients' bedsides and assisting nurses with the transition 24 hours a day, fielding phone calls even at 0100. She has worked tirelessly with EPIC and Endocrine to refine the process based on nurse feedback and patient outcomes. She has even provided off-hours support to the other facilities - always with kind words and patience.
