Joan is not just a nurse- she is an advocate, an educator, a caregiver, and a source of joy and comfort to those she serves.
In my years of experience as both an inpatient nurse and now as a nurse practitioner in the Advanced Heart Failure Clinic, I can confidently say that Joan is one of the most exemplary nurses I have ever had the privilege of working with.
Her clinical excellence, compassion, and unwavering commitment to patient care set her apart as a true leader in nursing. Joan consistently demonstrates an extraordinary level of care, thoroughness, and attention to detail. She approaches each patient interaction with empathy and intentionality, ensuring that every individual feels heard, seen, and genuinely cared for.
She takes the time to clearly explain the course of each visit, provide medication education and re-education, review the care plan, and outline any changes to home medications or follow-up appointments. Her ability to communicate effectively and compassionately builds trust and reassurance in every patient she encounters. She knows her patients incredibly well—often remembering even the smallest details of their lives and medical histories.
Joan routinely calls patients 1–2 days after their diuretic sessions to assess their response and provide ongoing support. It is this kind of consistent follow-through and personal attention that gives both patients and colleagues great confidence in the safety and quality of care under her watch. What makes Joan truly exceptional is not only her clinical skill, but the relationships she builds—not just with patients, but also with their caregivers and families.
Patients frequently travel long distances specifically to be seen in our clinic because they want Joan to be part of their care team. Her dedication goes far beyond the clinical setting. She has personally identified patients in need of home blood pressure monitors or scales and found ways to provide them when cost was a barrier. She has even organized small donations among staff to celebrate patients' milestones—once coordinating a group gift of a coffee maker because she knew how much a patient cherished their morning coffee.
One particularly memorable example of her thoughtfulness occurred recently with a palliative diuresis patient we’ve followed weekly for over two years. When she learned the patient’s birthday would fall on a Friday she had off, she still made it a priority to pick up cupcakes, decorate the patient’s chair, bring in balloons, and leave a signed birthday card—all to make the patient feel special and celebrated during their diuresis session.
These are not one-time gestures- they are consistent reflections of who Joan is every single day. Joan is not just a nurse- she is an advocate, an educator, a caregiver, and a source of joy and comfort to those she serves. She elevates the standard of care in our clinic and inspires everyone around her to do the same. It is hard to put into words the full impact of her presence, but suffice it to say: our patients are better, our team is stronger, and our clinic is brighter because of her. Joan is the embodiment of what this award stands for, and I can think of no one more deserving.
