As a retired nurse with over forty years of experience in a neighboring hospital, you can imagine how anxious I was about my impending surgery and how my independence and mobility would be impacted if it failed. I was not used to being the patient and my worry inched up each minute my procedure drew closer. Then I met Joanne

Instantly, she put me at ease with her warm smile and her confident manner. She welcomed me like an old friend and she took the time to introduce herself and get to know me, not as a patient but as a person. Together we bonded over our shared many years of nursing and I knew I was in the very capable hands of an “old school” peer. She was able to secure an IV on the first attempt (not an easy feat for me!) and in what seemed like minutes I was ready for my procedure.

As I waited, Joanne stayed focused on my comfort and did all the little touches including a reassuring touch, a repositioned pillow, and tucking in my blanket. I was truly cared for and cared about.
