As a healthcare practitioner in Alaska, I am no stranger to nurses, doctors, or hospitals. After my devastating motorcycle accident, I was medevac'd to Harborview. I was so painful, high on medications, and scared. You never really think that you could be in the position of those you are treating. During my stay I was fortunate to have my wife, mom, and dad by my side to support me.
While I was in and out of it in the ICU, Joann took the time to sit with my family and educate them on what was going on without hesitation, with my family's many questions at multiple times while in ICU. She showed me compassion when all I felt was shame, humility, and even when I lost my patience as my pain sky-rocketed. She showed me patience and understanding. She was very attentive and helpful. More importantly she gave me some peace during one of the darkest times of my life.
I wouldn't wish my injuries on anyone, but should someone need hospital services I hope they are fortunate enough to have experiences like I had with Joann. I know nurses get busy, but Joann made me feel like she was always there for me. She has changed how I want to treat my patients once I return to work. She has given me hope and faith in humanity.
Harborview is truly lucky to have an employee so dedicated and amazing. Joann is not just an employee, she is a gold standard.
