Joanna shared during our morning huddle, a story of a patient having an anxiety attack. She shared how she sat with the patient while the patient cried. She encouraged the patient to share her feelings and fears and through this process, she discovered the patient had a bad experience in the past at another hospital and the situation presently reminded her of that time. Joanna reminded all of us that a lot of our patients do have experiences in hospitals and bring that with them when they are dealing with us.
This story reminded me the reason why I love my job and enjoy interacting with patients. Sometimes when we are busy completing tasks, these small but meaningful interactions get lost. While listening to Joanna, I was inspired to listen with my heart as she does. Joanna is a role model to her nurses and a valued team member, who shows her love and concern for patients and fellow staff.

We had a patient change in status. The patient said, "Joanna never left my side. I felt comfortable knowing I was in good hands. She called another nurse from another floor to take a look at me. I'm glad this angel was there to take care of me." Joanna demonstrated leadership qualities that we value as team members and relief charge. She is dependable and advocates for her patients. Joanna goes above and beyond.
