I would like to nominate Ms. Johnson for the DAISY Nurse Leader Award. She took over as the Nurse Manager for 4C and has done much to turn the unit around. She has implemented Unit Celebrations that recognize the hard work that the staff is doing. Celebrating staff is such a simple thing but it helps to build employee morale. As a result of this, several 4C employees have been recognized receiving certificates, gift cards, and time off awards. Her program has also been implemented in other areas of the organization such as the Outpatient Clinics. Ms. Johnson has also been instrumental in making sure staff have been properly trained to provide care for Veterans receiving chemotherapy. We were in a situation where the outpatient clinic was having to cover these needs. After communicating my concerns to her, she worked swiftly to ensure the situation would be rectified. Ms. Johnson immediately went to work, having RNs complete their didactic training from Oncology Nurse Society and made accommodations in Unit staffing so that they could complete their competency training in the Chemotherapy & Infusion Clinic. As a result, there are now seven chemo-certified nurses trained to administer chemotherapy on the inpatient unit.
