She didn't have to, and no one asked or expected her to go that extra mile. She just did.
I was a 66-year-old woman who took a fall while hiking down a mountain in Arcadia National Park. Ignoring the possibility that I was severely injured, I continued my hike and spent a few more hours hiking around the Park. Not until I sat down for lunch in Bar Harbour did I discover bleeding from what I realised was a gash in the back of my head. After lunch, I walked through town to the Emergency Room at MDIH. This is where I first encountered Jocelyn as she came out of the ER to immediately greet me and perform a triage assessment.

Once in the ER, she was empathetic, kind, attentive and over the top professional. I tear up recalling her calm nature and the comfort she provided to me. Above all, her kindness and empathy kept me calm while I did not quite know yet the severity of my injury or what may be in store for me. She rarely left my side or was out of sight while tending to her other responsibilities. She chatted with me about her nursing career at MDIH, and that she actually worked in another department and was just filling in that day. She also shared her other interests with me, which included her talent for hair styling.

After Radiology cleared any further concerns regarding my injury and quoted a few staples later, Jocelyn was braiding my hair in a style to keep my wound clear to heal since she knew I had yet to travel back home to Florida. She did this for me out of the pure kindness of her servant's heart. This act did as much for my healing and peace of mind as the medical procedures did. She didn't have to, and no one asked or expected her to go that extra mile. She just did. I will never forget Jocelyn and her care. My greatest hope is that I can reflect into the World the compassion Jocelyn has towards her patients. What an inspiration she is!
