It is obvious that it is not a job for Jodie, but a calling.
Jodie has demonstrated great loyalty to the nursing profession and specifically to education within our hospital, making a difference to many patients, families, and co-workers in her career. Jodie joined Atrium Health in 2001 as a pediatric nurse on 7A. When Levine Children’s opened in 2007, Jodie moved over to work on LCH 9. Throughout her time at the bedside, Jodie frequently served as a preceptor to many new graduate nurses and always went above and beyond to teach families about their child’s illness, always demonstrating patience and understanding in any moment that she was educating.
When the opportunity to transition to a Diabetes Educator became available, Jodie enthusiastically made the change, and her love for “teaching” continued. Jodie has influenced care for many patients and families in her career. When you have the opportunity to observe Jodie in her element, as many who have worked with her like to say, you can feel Jodie’s love and passion for what she does.
When Jodie is providing education to a patient and their parents, she makes them feel as if they are the only patient that she needs to see. She may have a list of patients, but the family would never know, because she is so giving of her time and attention. She puts in the time and effort to ensure that they not only understand but are comfortable going home. It is obvious that it is not a job for Jodie, but a calling.
For our children and parents, getting the daunting new diagnosis of Diabetes is life-changing and often terrifying. Jodie brings positivity and enthusiasm when she walks into the room. Jodie has an ability to ease family fears,, and during their stay they develop trust in her.
Oftentimes, before Jodie arrives for her shift, her patients are asking for her. Her honesty and her ability to meet every family where they are are so impactful. Nurse peers at Levine Children’s enjoy working with her. The education does not stop with our patients and families. She is consistently known to be a resource to the nurses throughout LCH. Jodie’s level of expertise, willingness to teach, and positive, approachable demeanor are some of the many things that Jodie is known and respected for.
The endocrinologists also have a great relationship with Jodie and appreciate all the contributions that she brings to each and every patient. Recently, I heard Jodie say in a group of LCH teammates, “I love my job and couldn’t see myself working anywhere else.” I am thankful that Jodie chose to work at Levine Children’s. It is a better place because of teammates like her. I enthusiastically and strongly endorse her.
