Jodie keeps her role as a nurse with very high standards. She acts as an emotional support for the patient and encourages him to keep pushing forward as much as he wants.
Here at HMC, we have had a patient with very complex care that has been admitted for almost a year at the Trauma ICU. Jodie has been in charge of the direct care of this particular patient on a regular basis. Every time she is in charge, demonstrates integrity, professionalism and at the same time, she supports the special needs of this patient. Every time Jodie is on the floor you can see how the patient’s life quality improves. You could see him smiling and is able to enjoy a little bit of his new life although the difficulties that he currently goes through.
Jodie keeps her role as a nurse with very high standards. She acts as an emotional support for the patient and encourages him to keep pushing forward as much as he wants. Every time she is in charge of this patient, she not only performs her Trauma ICU duties, but also cares for all the little things that this patient can’t do such as personal care, she is always trying to be sure he is comfortable even though the floor is full, and they are short staffed.
I clearly remember one day when she was not working directly on the ICU floor but later that day she went to ask if someone needed help, she volunteered herself to help and even stayed working a couple of hours just to help relieve her coworkers.
Another thing for which I would like to nominate Jodie is due to her leadership role, she has also dedicated time to make sure that all the specialties team involved in the patient care could see him easily and to address every single problem during rounds, making sure the patient “doesn’t fall through the cracks”. She is always looking for ways to reduce the amount of pain this patient has. She even took time to sit with her team to develop guidelines to help other nurses and staff going above and beyond, creating communication boards, and she timely documents best practices we have found so far with this patient in order to keep his clinical and psychological needs and to be able to give him a voice in this ever-changing system.
Jodie exemplifies a service attitude, and denotes a high standard in nursing, she is definitely a role model to follow in healthcare. I firmly believe that her example drives us forward to be better at in-patient care, humanism, the development of our profession, and not leaving patient needs to the side.
