Jody Bickford, RN
During my time in postpartum recovery, Jody demonstrated exceptional empathy and compassion for my situation. She was an active listener and took time, out of her very busy night, to communicate with me so that I understood everything that was happening.
She recognized how important breastfeeding was to me, despite my physical limitations, and worked together as a team to find positions that supported independent feeding of my daughter. She came to me several times in the night to help me reposition myself when in pain and helped me with latching my daughter when I was unsuccessful.
Jody also recognized my need to take things slowly and move at my own pace. She constantly reassured me and made me feel like she had all the time in the world to help me. I never felt rushed or ignored while in her care.
I was incredibly blessed to have had Jody as my night nurse for two nights during my week in the hospital. I had several unexpected procedures during the night that would often prevent me from being able to eat dinner. On two different occasions, Jody made sure my husband and I were able to get a full meal off the overnight menu. Both times she had to personally rush downstairs to get my order in before they closed and brought it up to me.
During one of those late-night procedures, Jody advocated for me to be able to bring in my father after visiting hours so he could watch my newborn (who was discharged) while I was in the OR. This allowed my husband to wait for me in recovery. I did not have to be alone thanks to her.
Additionally, Jody recognized how much I was struggling with postpartum depression, anxiety, and pain. She advocated for me with my provider to seek alternative pain management treatment, as well as receiving medication for my mental health both in inpatient care and upon discharge.
Being three months postpartum now, I often think back on those nights and how much she listened to me, advocated for me, and provided exceptional care. As a healthcare provider myself, I can wholeheartedly say that Jody exemplifies the values and spirit of the DAISY award. The care she provides goes above and beyond her duties.
She supported me in the most challenging nights of my life, and I will be forever grateful for her.
