Jo Jo Long is a wonderful charge nurse who knows how to multi task very well. He not only focuses on the flow of throughput but actively works in the department to assist with bed side care. We would like to nominate Jo Jo for a DAISY Award because he not only deserves it, but also on a particular day demonstrated compassion and sensitivity to a patient that arrived in the Emergency Department. On 12/4/11 a patient was brought to us by EMS for changes in mental status from a nursing home.
We were extremely busy this day but Jo Jo focused on this patient to see what he could do to expedite her care. He overheard the physician and the nurse obtaining an evaluation on this patient. They were about to begin a full work up on her to see what was causing her change in status. Jo Jo noticed while the nurse was speaking with the patient - he wondered if the patient might have a hearing problem and questioned if this was related to her change in status.
Jo Jo decided to take matters into his hands so he not only assessed the patient; he started looking for hearing aide batteries in the department. When he could not fine them he said I will go and buy her some. Jo Jo took the time to go to Walgreen’s to buy a replacement battery for hearing aides. It worked! the patient was able to hear great and had no other complaints. Jo Jo not only went above and beyond to help this patient but used his own time and money which saved this patient an extensive work up! We are happy to have Jo Jo as a charge nurse.
