I believe Joey played a pivotal role in saving this patient at that point in time.
Joey's overall professionalism is well above most nurses that I have worked with over the years. He shows compassion but is not a push over and is not afraid to tell a patient NO. He is cool under some of the most extreme pressures. For example, when a patient was extremely sick and needed to be transferred to a higher level of care and this patient needed to be intubated just to be transported. The intubation went well but because of the severity of the patient's COVID infection of the lungs and numerous thrombus of the lungs, the ventilator was unable to oxygenate the patient and maintain oxygen sats above 80%. In over 20 years of hospital medicine, I have never seen a situation where a patient was intubated and the vent could not provide adequate oxygen to a patient. Because of this situation, it put extreme stress on everyone involved and some staff had to be calmed down, in that they had become ineffective. During this entire time Joey maintained his professional demeanor and remained calm and helped the Attending MD and myself the PA to keep him alive for well over an hour by bagging the patient which was made difficult in that the patient required a rate of 50-60 breaths per minute to maintain sat >90 which in its self took great effort. He also provided recommendations to Attending and myself with a plan of action and guided other staff on what was needed next. His efforts with other staff members helped get the patient stable enough that we were able to soon transport the patient to WVU. I believe Joey played a pivotal role in saving this patient at that point in time. This is just one example of many of his dedication to his profession and his patients.
