I don't know if any of you know what an awesome gesture of compassion understanding empathy and kindness our nurse Joey Meyer gave to a family recently. Joey was not directly involved in the care of the patient who recently passed in our ER. A young man whose only real dream in life was to be like most other members of his family who had served or were currently serving our country. This young man collapsed while drilling with his ROTC unit. He had been born with a heart problem and would never be able to serve himself, but being in the ROTC was going to have to do. Joey and I are both in the US Army. Joey understands what it means to serve. He, on his own, arranged for this young man to have a military type funeral. He obtained a unit of individuals to be the honor guard for this young man as well as an authentic military flag to drape and be ceremonially folded and given to his family in his honor. I wish to recognize him for being an outstanding human being for doing this. An incredible gesture that I cannot even imagine how much meant to this family. I am honored to call him my friend coworker and fellow soldier.
