Johanna is the type of nurse who goes above and beyond for every patient, every day. This is just one example of the impact she makes on those around her. Working on the unit we oftentimes get patients who are with us for extended periods of time, which is the case with a patient that Johanna has made a unique connection. This patient has had a very complicated hospital course with a poor prognosis. She noticed that the patient was having a more emotionally-difficult day than normal. Johanna sat and talked with the patient, and the patient told her that they were upset because the spouse’s birthday was upcoming, and for the first time in a long time they wouldn't be able to do anything special for the spouse’s birthday. With the patient’s diagnosis, they didn’t think that they would be around for the next birthday. After work, she went to the store and purchased flowers, balloons, and a card for the patient to help celebrate the spouse’s birthday. The extraordinary care that she provides to her patients supersedes nursing; Johanna truly makes an impact on everyone around them. Her actions and thoughtfulness made a significant impact on this patient and the spouse in the most difficult time of their lives.
