John Chelo P Real

John Chelo Real, a Level 3 student, embodies the very essence of the Silliman University College of Nursing philosophy. While many students excel when the conditions are perfect, Chelo excels despite the odds stacked against him. He does not come from a life of privilege; his friends know the silent battles he fights, from carrying a ripped bag to class to the terrifying moments his family nearly had to pull him out of school due to financial constraints. Yet, Chelo has never used hardship as an excuse. Instead, he has used it to fuel a scholarship-winning work ethic and deepen his capacity for empathy, a trait he displayed vividly during our rotation in the Surgical Ward.

During that rotation, he was assigned to a patient whom the unit was struggling with and who had been labeled "unruly" and "difficult" by the staff. This patient had bouts of anger, had ripped out his IV line, and had vehemently signed a waiver refusing a necessary procedure because he could not accept his diagnosis. The environment around this patient was one of frustration and judgment, but Chelo saw something different. Where others saw a difficult patient, Chelo saw a person in need of understanding. Chelo stepped in and utilized profound therapeutic communication. He did not rush or judge; he simply listened. He discovered that the patient’s anger stemmed from fear and a lack of understanding about the procedure. With patience and grace, Chelo explained the medical necessity in a way the patient could finally understand. The transformation was immediate and moving; the patient voluntarily retracted his refusal and asked if he could still undergo the procedure.

Chelo did not just facilitate a change of mind; he restored the patient’s trust in healthcare and ensured a life-saving intervention took place. It is awe-inspiring to realize that the student who gave so much energy to that patient is the same young man balancing a heavy load on his own shoulders. Chelo is a champion not just in the ward, but on the court, serving as the Setter for the SUCN Volleyball team since his first year and earning Best Setter in last year's intramurals. He is a servant leader, serving as Vice President for our batch and managing events and student concerns with a smile.

Where does a student with so many burdens find the strength to carry others? It is his faith. As a devoted church servant, Chelo centers his life on God. He pours from a cup that, by worldly standards, should be empty, yet through his faith, it overflows to everyone around him.

Chelo represents the students who have to fight harder to wear the white uniform. Recognizing him is not just an award for a single action; it is a recognition that grit, faith, and a servant’s heart are the true measures of a Silliman Nurse.
