John Fiorina, LPN
I am a 69-year-old homeless veteran currently residing at the Domiciliary. I would like to nominate Nurse John Fiorina for the DAISY Award because his quick thinking and compassionate care truly saved my life.
I was eating roast beef, thinking I had cut it into small enough pieces. As I get older, it’s becoming harder for me to tell what the right size is. Suddenly, I realized I was choking and gasping for air. In my panic, I forgot what to do and could only point desperately to my stomach as I approached Nurse John. Without hesitation, he immediately recognized what was happening, sprang into action, and performed the Heimlich maneuver. After three strong thrusts, the piece of meat was dislodged, and I was able to breathe again. John stayed with me afterwards, made sure I was checked out thoroughly, and reassured me throughout the ordeal. Ever since that day, Nurse John has continued to provide not just excellent clinical care, but also genuine kindness and support. He visits every day he is working, always bringing a sense of humor and joy that lifts my spirits. His encouragement and positive attitude have given me hope during a difficult time in my life. Nurse John embodies all the qualities of a DAISY Award nurse—knowledgeable, compassionate, vigilant, and dedicated. I am grateful for his quick response and the way he treats every patient with dignity and respect. He is a true asset, and I feel incredibly lucky to be under his care.
