My son was admitted to have an abscess removed on Sunday. After a horrible day at the ER, he was transferred to the second floor, waiting to be put under general anesthesia. We were already tired from a long day, and I was so sad. I was already so angry. Every single nurse on the second-floor area was so nice, especially Nurse Johnathan Selhorst. I saw this really tall, muscular male nurse, and I didn’t know what to expect. To my surprise, he was the gentlest and most caring nurse I have encountered in my 32 years of working for Kaiser. He showed so much care and concern for my son. So much compassion.

I see my son, who is so chubby and tall, so uncomfortable in this small bed, and all of a sudden I see John preparing a bigger bed for my son, making it perfect, and he said to my son, “I got you, buddy.” I know how uncomfortable that bed is for big guys like us. My son felt so comfortable with him. The way John was talking to us, he told us what made him become a nurse. The way he was talking about his profession, I could see how much he loves being a nurse. He is so caring and compassionate. I know that a lot of times nurses are overworked. But in this situation, John made a huge difference in our lives. He is caring, knowledgeable, and compassionate. We could not have asked for a better nurse.

Thank you, Johnathan, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
