Unfortunately, on Day 93 after my husband's stem cell transplant, my husband went back to the BMT unit. What a great relief I felt when Johnna entered my husband's room telling us she was going to be his nurse. Immediately, I knew everything was going to be OK.
We had the opportunity to meet Johnna in the BMT ICU. Since the first time we met her, she showed professionalism, enthusiasm, and compassion towards both of us. She demonstrated patience to my husband by explaining things he did not understand the first time. She also adjusted the volume of her voice when it was necessary. She was kind and sweet on rough moments but, always focused on her responsibilities.
One time, when my husband needed some distractions, during her break, she was able to play Rummikub with my husband and me. Suddenly, she was called on duty but, when she had a second chance she came back for revenge. To my husband that was an act of compassion towards him that he will never forget. Every time he has a chance to talk about it he tells his family and friends.
In addition, I was fortunate to have her as my husband's nurse when my husband was discharged from the hospital after his transplant. By the time he was discharged I got overwhelmed with the list of medications I was going to administer to my husband. She noticed my preoccupation and right away wrote on a piece of paper the list of medications. She took the time to write and organize all the meds for me....morning, noon, evening, and night. I still keep that list. Every time I see it, I remember the compassion she had not only towards my husband (the patient) but towards me (the caregiver).
For all these reasons, Johnna is a DAISY Nurse.
