I honestly think there were moments when she encouraged him enough to want to live.
I would like to nominate Johnny Lee Irick from the CVICU for the extraordinary care she provided to my father during his 43-day admission. What she did for him, and for our family, went far beyond routine nursing care. A prolonged CVICU stay is physically and emotionally exhausting. There were many days when my father was discouraged, weak, and understandably overwhelmed. But through it all, Johnny Lee never let him give up. She consistently encouraged him to participate in physical therapy, even on the hardest days. She motivated him to eat when he had no appetite. She reminded him of how far he had come when he could only see how far he still had to go. Most importantly, she never let him lose sight of his goal, to recover well enough to play golf again. She would gently but firmly remind him what he was working toward, helping him focus on life beyond the hospital walls. There were days when I truly believed her encouragement gave him the strength to keep fighting. I honestly think there were moments when she encouraged him enough to want to live.
What speaks even more to her character is what happened after his discharge. At my father’s follow-up appointment, she made it a point to walk to a separate part of the hospital just to see him. She did not have to do that. She chose to. That simple act meant more to our family than she may ever know. It showed that her care was not confined to a shift or a unit; it was genuine and lasting. She treated my father as more than a cardiac patient in the CVICU. She treated him as a person with goals, passions, and a future. In a unit where clinical precision is critical, she demonstrated both exceptional skill and extraordinary heart. For her compassion, her unwavering encouragement, and her belief in my father when he struggled to believe in himself, she embodies everything the DAISY Award represents. Our family will never forget the role she played in his recovery, and one day, when he is back on the golf course, we will know she helped make that possible.
