It felt like the perfect end to an experience where he had provided not only excellent clinical care but also kindness, reassurance, and humanity.
I would like to recognize Jonas, a nurse at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, IL, for the exceptional care he provided to my 84-year-old father this year.
My father had a complicated surgical procedure to remove the upper right lobe of his lung. During the night and into the morning, he went into atrial fibrillation and remained in Afib despite medications until late the next night. It was an understandably stressful time for our family.
On Saturday morning, my father seemed to be having a good morning, but after taking a nap, he woke up extremely agitated, confused, and upset, completely different from his normal behavior earlier that day.
Jonas immediately recognized that this change was concerning and responded with remarkable attentiveness and professionalism. He carefully checked my father's blood glucose, performed stroke assessments, and worked diligently to make sure that nothing more serious was occurring. Throughout the situation, he demonstrated calm expertise along with genuine compassion for my father.
What stood out even more was the way Jonas cared for our family. After my sister and I left the hospital that day, Jonas took the time to personally call me to let me know that my father had vomited and that his abdomen appeared distended, so the team planned to obtain an abdominal X-ray.
Later, he called again to update me that my father's Afib had finally resolved and that he seemed to be doing better. Those phone calls meant so much to us; they showed that Jonas understood how worried we were and wanted to keep us informed.
When we returned, Jonas was again my father's nurse. He greeted my dad warmly and with sincere concern, telling him that he had really scared him the day before and that he was very glad to see him doing so much better. That moment reflected the genuine connection Jonas had formed with his patient.
Later that day, when my father was discharged, we were delighted to see that Jonas was the nurse who wheeled him out of the hospital. It felt like the perfect end to an experience where he had provided not only excellent clinical care but also kindness, reassurance, and humanity.
Healthcare is demanding work, and many acts of compassion happen quietly and go unnoticed. Jonas exemplifies what the DAISY Award represents: extraordinary clinical skill paired with deep compassion for patients and families. He is truly an asset to Northwest Community Hospital.
Our family is incredibly grateful for the care Jonas provided to our father during a very frightening time. His attentiveness, communication, and genuine kindness made a lasting impression on all of us.
