Jonathan always comes prepared for the day with a great attitude and is optimistic about what the shift holds. Working on TICU, we become very close with our patients, as many of them stay for months. Recently, we had a patient return due to neglect, and it was heartbreaking. When one of our patients goes into DFACS custody, they stay in the hospital for a very long time, as it is hard to find foster families that are willing to take trach/vent dependent children. Trach/vent children need constant attention and fostering one pretty much becomes a full-time job. There are constant beeps, medications, trach care, suctioning, and appointments. Anywhere you go, a slew of supplies must be present just in case something goes wrong with the trach. While we care for these patients during their long stay and do our best to show them love, a nurse is not a parent, and a hospital is not a home. But that was not the case for this child. Jonathan and his wife decided to foster our precious patient and the care and love that they give him is the definition of compassionate. He works as a nurse in the hospital and at home. Instead of the patient being confined to his hospital room seeing multiple faces a day, he is going on walks and trick-or-treating and being showered with love by this nurse. I cannot imagine a more meaningful difference you could make in a child's life than to make them family.
