While many students grasp the clinical and technical aspects of nursing, this student embodies the heart, soul, and art of compassionate care. We were caring for a patient who was anxious and upset about the diagnosis and plan of care. In the middle of a demanding shift, this student stayed present with that patient and chose human-first connection — and the patient was able to relax and participate in their own plan of care. That same care shows in how this student learns: seeking out opportunities, welcoming feedback, and lifting the team around them. This is the kind of nurse patients remember for the rest of their lives.
